Our Decisions Make Us Who We Are

Every decision we make, every minute of every day of our lives, makes us who we are.

Read that sentence again, slowly. Let it sink in. That is a profoundly powerful concept that, sadly, is lost on most people.

Each and every day, we are faced with what seem to be simple choices: left or right; paper or plastic; dogs or cats; boxers or briefs. Simple decisions, right? Nothing earth-shattering. But there are other choices – more weighty choices: like whether to tell the truth or tell a lie; follow the rule of law or ignore it; honor your word, commitments, or promises or go back on them; do what’s right or do what’s easy. Again, simple decisions, right?

When we choose the easy path, we start down a treacherous incline, the slippery slope. One lie leads to another, and then another. Breaking one rule makes it easy to break the next, and so on. Convenience becomes the mantra, and next thing you know you’re in a place you never anticipated. You have to keep telling lies to cover up for the lies you’ve already told, often forgetting what you lied about in the first place. The consequences of the lies come crashing down with unintended results, loss of credibility, loss of friendships, your career, or worse.

Easy isn’t always the best choice, especially in the long run. Often the best decisions – the right decisions – are the hardest to make and the hardest to keep up with. Someone once told me, “start the way you mean to go” meaning chose the path that will take you to your intended goal and stick to it.

If you start with honesty, integrity, and a commitment to be the best “you” that you can be, then the decisions will start getting easier. If you have set clear goals and a vision for your future, your decisions will be influenced by that vision and you will naturally gravitate towards the right choices. Doing the right thing becomes second nature and you don’t have to really think about it anymore.

Next time you’re at a crossroads between two very distinct choices, take a minute. Take a deep breath, visualize your future, and then really listen to your gut; that little voice inside. You know right from wrong, you know what will move you closer to your goal and what will move you away, so do the right thing. Make the choice that will make you the person you want to be.
