Strategies, Systems, and Controls
Is your team capable of producing measurable, repeatable results every time?
Do you know the Strategies, Systems, and Controls necessary to achieve your long-term goals?
When taking on a project of any size – whether at home, at work, in your hobby or sport – there are specific steps you must follow to ensure success. Skipping these steps could lead to chaos or overwhelm, neither of which will get you closer to your goal.
I’ve created a WORKSHEET template that you can use to walk through this process.
First, start with the RESULT you want; the desired outcome you are driving towards. As the old saying goes “Start with the end in mind.” When you define your goal, the path to the goal becomes more evident.
Once you have the result, you need to consider the Strategies, Systems, and Controls that will act as your path to success.
Strategies refer to the plan, method, or calculated scheme for obtaining a particular goal. There are as many strategies as there are problems to confront, so identifying a list of potential strategies will give you options to accomplish the same goal and achieve the same result.
Systems are the means, processes, or steps for achieving the results. Every business runs on a set of business processes which produce a predictable and repeatable outcome. For each strategy listed, there might be multiple processes you could follow to achieve the desired result. Once the system is defined, following that system should always produce the expected outcome.
Controls are measurements or metrics you put into place to ensure things like quality, timing, production rate, or ROI of the outcome. These measurements indicate whether the system is functioning as planned or if changes are needed to realign with the strategy and result.
